The European Athletics U23 and U20 Championships medal features a panorama of Tallinn and a stadium curve

The European Athletics U23 and U20 Championships Medal, unveiled today, features a panorama of Tallinn and a stadium curve. A total of 88 sets of medals will be awarded during both championships, for which more than 2,000 young athletes from all over Europe will compete in Tallinn.

According to the author of the medal design, Jarmo Jaaku, the medal symbolizes the launch of young athletes to the top and introduces the venue of the competition. “The medal is shaped like a balloon and features the recognizable panorama of Tallinn and the stadium curve,” said Jarmo Jaaku.

According to Olympic champion Gerd Kanter, one of the most titled athletes in Estonia and a member of the medal design jury, there are several medals in his medal cabinet, which show details related to the venues. “The Tallinn 2021 medal represents Tallinn beautifully. It is a  dignified medal worth striving for. I wish the Estonian and all other teams a lot of success and invite everybody to cheer for the potential medal winners at Kadriorg Stadium, ”said Gerd Kanter.

240 individual and 96 relay medals

The U23 age group championships will start July 8th, and the first medals will be awarded to the winners the same day. A total of 240 individual medals and 96 relay medals will be awarded at the U23 and U20 competitions, the U20 championships starting a week later. During these two weeks, more than 2,000 athletes will take part of the European Championships, making them the biggest athletics title competitions in Europe this year.

22 designs were received for the medal competition. The winning medal design was chosen by the jury – Liina Laasma, the winner of javelin throw at the 2011 U20 European Championships, Jekaterina Mirotvortseva, an Estonian athlete for U20 European Championships in 2021, Olympic champion Gerd Kanter, the president of Estonian Athletic Association Erich Teigamägi, coach and illustrator Anti Veermaa and Rait Roosve representing Eesti Pank.

The official international partners of the 2021 European Athletics U23 and U20 Championships are Spar and Le Gruyère, the broadcasting partner is Eurovision and the official cooperation partner is Mondo. The supporters of the competition are Audi, Kalev, NIKE, Postimees, SYNLAB Eesti, Tradehouse, Utilitas and Värska Vesi. The competitions are organized by the Estonian Athletic Association in cooperation with the European Athletics Association, the City of Tallinn and the Ministry of Culture.
